How are you helping your child learn about his/her ADHD?

My 11 year old son was diagnosed with ADHD at age six at the end of first grade. He takes Concerta and this year we've decided to let him go without meds for the summer. He is beginning to be able to tell us the difference between how he feels/functions on the meds and off.
I'd like to think that as he matures over the coming years that we will be able to help him learn enough about his ADHD and to be self aware enough to make his own decision about whether he wants to take medicine or not. If he knows how his ADHD affects his concentration, mood, organization, relationships, etc. and has learned coping strategies, shouldn't he be able to make informed decisions? I want him to be able choose, to not feel medication is the only answer, or that taking the meds is bad and should be avoided.
Has anyone gone through this learning process with their own child? I don't want to reinvent the wheel here. Thanks!
