Hi I am a mom who just found out my daughter has ADHD. She is almost 5 years old but none of the doctors around here want to medicate her till she is betwwen the ages of 6 and 8.. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can treat this without medication? Or on how to deal with it at all? I am very concerned cause she has lots of problems in school and she is only in pre k and I dont need her being kicked out cause of this..

Hi there, My daughter was diagnosed at 5 also. She was also diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and her doctor had no problem at all with starting her on meds. Her problems were very extreme though, she would tear up the classroom and have to be physically removed, by what I called the "SWAT" team!! She couldnt handle the sensory input from the classroom and that was causing the outbursts. I thank God that I found a doctor that wasnt afraid to try the meds.

My son has ADHD and possibly sensory intergration. He has been on 3 different medications. I would get a second opinion from a well known pediatrician, who really knows how to deal with ADHD in children.

My migraines started up again (after being migraine free for 1 year) when my son, whom I thought to be just a selective-listening hyper-active 1-1/2 year-old, played constantly at all hours of the day & night. At that time he was sleeping 3-4 hours a day, if I was lucky he'd sleep maybe 8 hours a day in two intervals. It got so hard for my fiance to conduct work being so sleep deprived that he and I came to a decision to have our son evaluated. My now 39 month old son was diagnosed back in September 2004 with Autism Spectrum Disorder-Not Otherwise Specified, ADHD, a Sleeping Disorder, Oppositional Defiant Disorder, Speech Developmental Delays, Social Developmental Delays, Idiosyncratic Eating Disorder, Sensory Integration Dysfunction(Over/Under sensitivities). All I can advise is that you take your child and have him evaluated by another physician/psychiatrist. Having a child with a disability is a socially & emotionally draining process, especially when you have other children in your household to nurture/care for. He started services with the Early Childhood Services-State Department where we live and they disagreed with my son's psychiatrist/physician to be on medications, and that my son needs to outgrow his ADHD organically? Our problem now resides with the Department of Education and it's like a never-ending story trying to obtain services for my son's PLEP-Personal Level Education Plan. I've finally got in contact with a parent consultant at the Learning Disabilities Association and they are a good source of advocacy. If you know of any information regarding grants for a low-income family with a child that has disabilities please let me know. Thank you very much and good luck!!!

Hello, I am a mom to a very hyper active son. my son was diagnosed at 30 months with adhd, oppositional defiant disorder, o.c.d., anxiety, and asperger's (autism). He could not have a normal conversation with anyone, he couldn't even tell me what he had done at daycare. i started noticing problems when he never looked at me when i would talk to him as a small baby. now at the age of 4 he will may eyecontact for about 3 seconds before he has to look away. but he couldn't tell me what he had done at daycare or answer any questions that involved using more than yes or no. when asked a question he would repeat it back, although he sometimes would chage a word or two around, he would not give me an answer. i searched for all kinds of information about adhd and autism and he had symptoms of both, although they are not severe. i mentioned this to every doctor that he saw and no one would even discuss it with me because they all saaid he would grow out of it or he is too young to have those kinds of symptoms. i finally foud a doctor that would listen to me and he gave me some questionairs myself and any other person that had been around my son. after taking those back in, he immediatly schedualed me an appointment for the next day. my son was acting (normal) for him whichwas embarrasing for me, but it is what the doctor needed to see. he started him on a medicine called clonidine 1mg, it is an adult blood pressue medication. it would slow him down enough to be able to concentrate on things. within the first 3 days of taking this medication, my son who had never watched a program on tv because he could not sit still long enough, watched cartoons for the first time. and when i asked him what he had done one day at daycare, he told me that he had played with all the kids and all the toys. i will never forget that, i had my first conversation with my son and all it took was 1 little pill. i was truly amazed. we then after sometime added in a medication called tenex 1mg. , and now he is on an extended release form called intuniv 2mg. as well as the clonidine 1mg, at bedtime. i am grateful that this doctor finally listened to me, because my son is doing great, he loves going to preschool and we have all of his "outbursts" under control. i wish the best for anyone who is going through the same problems i did, just don't give up their will be one doctor that will listen.
