I am addicted to eating. It has gotten to the point where I'm extremely overweight and very unhealthy. My doctor recently told me that if I don't shape up and get healthy I'll die of a heart attack in the next couple of years. Are there support groups for eating addicts?

Overeaters Anonymous is a wonderful group dedicated to the very addiction you are talking about. Compulsive overeating and binge eating is a serious problem and your doctor is right: it will kill you.
The good news is you are not alone. Thousands if not millions of people struggle with similar issues. While my main addiction was cocaine and alcohol I know the feelings you are dealing with. The food promises comfort, enjoyment and distraction... it tastes so good and it is exciting to plan the meals and think about how amazing its going to be. The reality is that when I was done with my coke and booze I wanted to die... I didn't want to live and I had no energy to help myself. The discipline of taking care of yourself will breed self-esteem. I promise you that. But you have to work for it. And it is worth the work. Check out OA and also I would suggest working with a nutritionist and therapist to address the underlying issues behind your eating.

I understand how you feel. It's not easy getting over such an addiction. I've been fighting it for years now. I'm addicted to eating and dieting. I binge eat and then spend hours online looking for different diets to try out. After years of this, I'm still overweight and unhappy.
