Is Hydrocodone or Vicadin Really Addictive?

Posted by
I've taken Hydrocodone for many years as prescribed. Currently, my limit for pain is 3-1/2 tabs per day at 500 mgs.. with no abuse. I've stopped taking it on numerous occasions with no withdrawal symptoms just to see if my body reacted. It never did, and believe, depending of your body system, a person may never become addicted. I also feel this particular medication, when taking properly, works very well compared to many other pain killers I've tried in the past, which did not work. To me, Hydrocodone is the best when experiencing severe pain (which is my case, but sometimes can be extreme pain). I am very well desciplined with this medication, and get tired of hearing negative reports from all sides. I just wish people would stop abusing this medication, because for people like me, who really needs it for pain, and doesn't take it to get high, makes it much harder for doctors to prescribe, lest they become audited by the government. During this time, I'm very sick, and hope the government and doctors will ease up on this particular medication.

Yes, Hydrocodone is very addictive and do you know that you can stop for a little while depending on how long you have taken them and feel nothing, because it is still in your system. So, how long have you stopped taking them? I do believe you will have withdrawal symptoms. Just because it is a narcotic and if you have taken them for a year or so, you will eventually have withdrawal symptoms. That is why the doc tells you to not to stop taking them all the sudden, you do have to be weened off of them. So, on that part I don't agree with. But, on the other hand, I also wish people would not abuse the drug, because it is hard for people like you and I to get them. I am also in pain everyday and most of it severe. But, you have to understand you can get them anywhere you want not just with a doctor and that part is sad. But, what do we do as just two people who are in severe pain. But, do what ever are doctors tell us and deal with them giving what they can. It is sad very sad.

There is a differance between addiction and being chemically dependant. Addiction is the need of having to have. Not being able to do without mentally after being detoxed. You didn't specify how long you have been on your meds. or how long you have went without them. I can assure you that if you have taken the hydrocodone for a period of time you will go through withdrawals. This doesnt mean your an addict. It also doesn't mean your not. You could be chemically dependant. This is something that you will have to decide for yourself. If one takes a narcotic for x amount of time your body and your neuro transmiters gets use to this chemical and when you suddenly stop this med. your body has to have time to readjust without this chemical..... Therefor it's not recommended that you stop without being under a doctors care, or stop "cold turkey". Now you can ask your Doctor to get a second opinion if you would like. Good luck Alabama
