Parents with autistic children

Posted by stressless

I just wanted to share a story. I was taking a 3 hour train ride to visit my family a month ago and I was sitting in front of a woman and her young son. The boy was a bit rambunctious and at one point I looked back at the mother and son. I guess the look on my face conveyed annoyance because the mother tapped me on my shoulder and explained that her son was autistic and she would do her best to keep him from being too loud or from kicking my seat.

I felt horrible for turning around. I didn't mean for her to think I was annoyed. I felt such shame and felt horrible for the mother having to apologize for her little son's condition. I can't imagine being a parent having to deal with such a thing.

Honestly, I don't think most of us mind explaining.  'We know that others cannot tell by looking at our chidren that there is a problem.

I have never minded explaining t Autism is to people. Knowledge is power and I make sure to research alot about the newest break throughs with autistic kids.

Looking at my son also you'd not know that he is Autistic, it is in the behavior. To compound that he also has ADHA and ODD. So I have my hands full.

My child was diagnosed with severe adahd, odd, ocd, and has symptoms from both spectrums of autism. Yet because she is acyive the schools and even ssi tell me that there is nothing wrong with her. She cannot stay on one subject for longer than a max of 2 minutes. has severe problems doing anything involving math and is very clingy. Not to mention she has no sense of danger at all. But let someone get upset around her showing or not and she starts crying and usually is uncontrolled for periods of 20 minutes or more. Sometimes there are no noticable triggers. Can you tell me if this is normal for a child like this. No one in my area appears to have a clue.
