I gained weight on depakote and effexor also. I haven't heard of abilify though. Have you heard of / or tried Lamictal? It has been my "miracle drug" for mood stabilizing. (another note: If I'm remembering correctly, I went through horrible withdrawal when I stopped the effexor. If you're planning to switch meds, I suggest taking some time off work if possible.) Good Luck

You will lose weight but not as quickly as you gained it. The same thing happened to my daughter while on Depakote. Abilify is a great mood stabilizer. It made the world of difference in her complete outlook on life. I too gained weight while on Depakote. I'm now on carbatrol ER and have been slowly losing weight. I don't know if this will work for you but I've been taking 1 tsp of organic extra virgin coconut oil in the morning and again before dinner in the evening. It's helping me slowly lose weight because it takes care of the craving for fatty foods. On the plus side my skin isn't as dry and hair is more manageable. Good luck in your weight loss. Remember there are so many different medications out there that if one doesn't work for you there are many more to try.
