If you find yourself ridden with stomach pain, you may be tempted to search for medications for relief. And although they may work, all you may need to feel better are the following tips.

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is characterized by loose, watery stools that occur three or more times a day. It's a common problem that usually lasts one or two days, and goes away on it own. Some research suggests that eating foods containing probiotics-strains of living bacteria that are similar to the ones normally found in your digestive tract-may help ease diarrhea symptoms. Probiotic foods to try include yogurt, cheese, miso, and tempeh. But side effects of probiotics might include gas and bloating.

Also try,

  • Drinking plenty of clear liquids including water, broths, and juices, except for apple and pear juices, which can make your diarrhea worse.
  • Avoiding caffeine and alcohol, and foods such as dairy products, fatty, and high-fiber foods.
  • Eating gelatin also may help.

Indigestion

Indigestion is a general term used to describe discomfort in your upper abdomen and includes symptoms such as bloating, belching, and nausea. Overeating, eating too quickly, and smoking are some common causes of indigestion. You may find some relief from drinking herbal tea with peppermint. Engaging in some relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation may also help.

Also try,

  • Eating smaller, more frequent meals and chewing your food slowly
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Exercising regularly

Heartburn

If you have an occasional burning sensation in your chest, just behind your breastbone, it's probably heartburn. The problem happens when stomach acid backs up into your esophagus. Anxiety and stress can exacerbate heartburn symptoms. Some types of complementary and alternative treatments may help ease anxiety and stress, including:

  • Aromatherapy
  • Hypnosis
  • Gentle exercise such as walking or bike riding
  • Massage
  • Relaxation techniques, such as guided imagery

Also try,

  • Avoiding tight-fitting clothing
  • Maintaining a healthy weight
  • Eating smaller, more frequent meals
  • Quitting smoking

These common ailments and natural remedies may provide you with some relief, although there is little or no scientific evidence to prove their effectiveness. So if your symptoms are severe or persist more than a few days, see your doctor for a diagnosis and recommendations on treatment.
