extended use of heartburn medication

Posted by badeatinghabits

I'm wondering if extended use of heartburn medication has any bad side affects? Does heartburn medication just ease the pain of heartburn or does it actually help cure? If it doesn't help cure it, is there a way to end the pain once and for all?

That's a good question. I think changing your diet for good will do more good than taking pills for the rest of your life. I don't know if medicines have side effects for this sort of thing but I do know that I wouldn't want to depend on them forever.

I have been taking Prilosec OTC everyday for about 8 months now.  There have been a few times that I have missed a pill or two and I was in complete agony.  I have GERD but no health insurance to go to a doc and find alternatives.  However, until I can go, taking a pill everyday isn't as inconvienient as canceling plans because of horrid heartburn.

I was one of those who was petrified to go off the medicine Acid reducer so I was for four year recently it took a horrible toll on my health. My iron was depleting (serious health issue with many horrible symtoms) because stomach acid is needed for iron and other nutrients to be absorbed. I am now off the meds rebuilding my vitamins and iron and working hard to control stomach issues naturally. I am getting there little by little. I was told that the medicine was safe by my doctor anytime I questioned being on it for so long. Also have started an excercise program and it helps.

Most of them do not have side effects as such. But it is advisable that you check with doctor that it is heartburn that is causing you this pain or something else!
