Anybody Out There Undergone Gastric Bypass Surgery?

Posted by TGestives544

Hello, I'm brand new to this site, and am wondering if anyone has experience personally with gastric bypass surgery.  I'm about 100 lbs overweight and have not had luck losing ample weight with diet and exercise alone.  I'm diabetic and depressed and am seriously considering bypass.  Does anyone have stories to share? tx

I have a very close friend who traveled to Europe to have this procedure done. She saw results for the first couple of months but then hit a plateau. This depressed  her and she started eating like she used to. Now the band has no effect whatsoever because she really never changed her eating habits. As with anything in life, it's not always easy as it seems. I think the surgery is a great idea if you're willing to make the necessary life changes that go along with it.

...I had gastric bypass surgery on June 19, 2009.  I am 3 months post op and loving it!  I lost 63 pounds since before my surgery and I feel wonderful.  I have no more back pain or knee pain or any pain.  I highly recommend it to anyone....you will feel so much better mentally and physically!!!!

...Hi, My name is Ann.  I had gastric by pass this past November. I found a very reputable Bariatric Clinic here in Greenville SC.  The program I enrolled for was very involved for the first 4-6 months before surgery.  I have tried every weight loss program out there and I would lose weight only to gain it back.  The program my clinic requires are several months of nutrional classes along with psycology evaluation and support groups. We also have dieticians that work with us in meal planning after surgery and once we are patients of this clinic we are life long patients there.  We always have them for support if need be. The pouch you have after surgery only holds 4 ounces and believe me if you try to eat more than what they tell you, you will regret it.   We also had to have so many mg of protein every day.  That stuff is horrible tasting.  I finally was told by someone that I could get a protein drink at Publix  that was a lot cheaper than what the clinic was selling it for.  It was still a powder but if you mix it in the blender with water it isn't bad.  Also after surgery you have to start taking vitamins every day for the rest of your life.  We take Opti Source that is made for bariatric patients. You can also get this vitamin at Walgreens its about $5.00 cheaper there than the clinic.  We also have to take previcid every day for six months.  I am now going into my 3rd month and have lost 45 pounds plus the 16 pounds I lost before surgery which gives me a total right now of 61 pounds.  I am thrilled with the results of my weight loss and the doctor told me the other day that I will lose another 20% by May.  I have dropped down from a size 20-22  and 1X,-2X down to a size 14 in pants and large in shirts, sweaters and blouses.   I am beginning to like the way I look and feel better about myself.  The energy I have now is great. I have so much energy that I feel like I have taken speed or something. Its a natural high I call it.  Now let me tell you I have become very close to some of the people that  were in my group and we keep in touch and every one of us have experienced or is experiencing problems. Some of the problems are vomiting every time you eat or bad diarreah and gas. Also dumping syndrome. I am still trying to remember to take small bites and chew my food very slowly.  Some of us have experience our taste for certain things have changed or we can no longer tolerate certain foods we enjoyed before having the surgery, however every person is different and respond differently to the surgery.  I could go on and on about this subject but I will close for now. If you would like more info about this contact me at gwtw53Charter.net

Good luck on your surgery if you decide to have it. You may also consider lapband surgery. It's not as invasive as gastric by pass.

If I can help you in any way let me know.

Yours truly,

Ann
