Posted by Ventura75

I was diagnosed with 7 goiters. 6 are fluid filled 1 had it's own beat! So I was, hyper, nervous, overeactive, anxious, had weight loss with heart palapatations. I jst got a dose of radiation(hopefully jst enough to kill goiters) yeah right! I'm in the 5 week waiting period to get my blood drawn and see the doctor in six weeks. I've already got sick (sinus and earn infections are frequent for me. My pulse was only 92over62. Does this mean I will need hormone replacement? What should I expect about dosages? Any advice? Plus my hair and skin has aged badly overnite! Help jst 35!

All I can say is "WOW!" I'm shocked that none of this was discussed with your Dr prior to this procedure? I had the same issue almost identical in 2007, it was decided that due to a Thyroids ability to 're-grow' itself to have a total Thyroidectomy done. The nodules had also grown onto 2 Vocal Chords, I will always be hoarse when talking for prolonged periods and forget singing now. While a very unpleasant procedure to experience I did not have to have any radiation done, luckily none of the Nodules were Cancerous.

So to begin with your current issues:

1. Have the biopsies of the Nodules returned all benign? Be sure to follow up on this? Do not assume if the Dr doesn't mention it that it is a given. Always ask for test results!

2. The Radiation is going to lower your Immunity. You should be taking care to limit your public activities and on a good Vitamin and Nutrition Plan to help your body to recover from this trauma and treatment.

3. There is a definite possibility that as prior to the Radiation you will need thyroid replacement and follow up blood test every 3- months; for the rest of your life. What dosages and types will be found through your Dr's recommendations, your bodies response to them, and your blood work findings. These can and will fluctuate through out your life. The blood pressure may or may not ever be Normal? Thyroid patients are known to have a lower than normal pressure. Unless you experienced dizziness or fainting it shouldn't be an issue and this procedure is not a guarantee of fixing this, though the heart palpitations when your thyroid levels are corrected should go away.

4. Combine the thyroid and radiation and your hair and skin will naturally respond to this- usually with some  or all of your hair falling out and numerous patches to sometimes severe dry skin and possibly a rash too. You are probably experiencing some bruising easily, and be aware that Thrush and Yeast Infections may also be an issue for you at this time. You will need to increase your water intake, use good skin moisturizers and for your hair an increase in Protein consumption can help along with a very good Shampoo and Conditioner that possibly your Dr or Hair Dresser could recommend.

You've been through a lot, and the road before you is still undetermined. So try to get plenty of rest, try not to worry too much, moderate exercise and good nutrition will always help. You may need to also find an Endocrinologist to help determine your Thyroid treatment and recovery if you haven't done so already.

Good Luck!
