Thyroid Surgery

Posted by sandi

I am scheduled to have my thyroid removed & wanted some input on what to expect.  I have Graves Disease & Thyroid Eye Disease.  I've been going up & down on medication for 3 yrs now & my endocronologist said it's time to remove the thyroid.  Has anyone had their thyroid removed surgically?

I had a complete thyroidectomy 1 1/2 yrs ago. The physical recovery from surgery wasn't bad; however, the first three months were a hormonal roller coaster with severe anxiety and depression. My family doctor insisted she could regulate the TSH level herself. After six months of continued fatigue and irritability I schedule an appt. w/ an endocrinologist who got me on the right track nearly a year post surgery. I'd say I am 90% back to "normal." Crazy little things have occurred like heart palpitations when I had too much synthroid as well as sudden diarrhea. The hair loss continues to come and go, it's usually a sign that I don't have enough synthroid.  Stay on top of yourself after the surgery, KNOW your body and don't let a doctor poopoo your symptoms.  And, make sure you are seeing an endocrinologist!  Good luck.

Hi, I also was diagnosed with Graves and I had my thyroid removed late Sept. Can you tell how and what I can expect to feel? My Synthroid was already adjusted and now my endo. says its a waiting game to see see if my levels are ok but not until Dec. I don't know about all these things happening to me but will be calling my endo next week. Anything you can tell me would be a help.  Thanks, Ella
